I get it, the touring pros hate them. But here is the deal, pro-ams in most cases bring in 144 people on any given Monday or Wednesday, plus anyone they might know who wants to follow them. They bring revenue to the host clubs in the restaurants, the pro-shops and even the caddies. I do not have empirical data to prove this, but I would venture to say that they also help to a small degree for viewership as participants are eager to view how the players did on the same green they putted only days ago. From a tournament stand point, it is a much easier sell for media coverage, hospitality packages and sponsorships when pro-ams are in the mix.

The Honda Classic Pro-Am featured past and present Miami Dolphins as well as a PGA Tour player. I noticed a lot of laughs, a great deal of people milling about, a full lobby bar and familiar faces from Pro-Ams of the past. The contrast to the CA could not have been more different. There, PGA Tour players play a practice round and then quietly chip and putt for hours on end. For those outside of the game who think golf is boring on TV, how about trying to have people watch these guys chip and putt for hours on end.

The tour is big business, I realize that. But where are and who are the Craig Parry’s on tour who just sip a Guiness at the bar after a pro-am or practice round. I believe that the two most common activities, Tiger excluded, on tour is working out in the gym and electrolysis. Players now walk briskly through the lobby on the way to the gym in their sleeve-less Under Armour and Nike gear, looking for that burn. The tour needs fat guys with six packs and personality, not hairless creatures with six pack abs.

The usual procession of golf is that if you stand on the 18th, wave after wave of players comes through. From afar you can see their disappointment with their shot that lands 10 feet from the pin. You’re not quite sure who it is, oh wait Poulter is wearing the pink pants today, what an eccentric. Trevino, Chi-Chi and the rest had personality. You recognize people on tour most of the time not by who they are but how they dress. And a World Golf Championship is even worse because the bottom 20 are for the most part unrecognizable to the people in the states or Europe. Are there really that many good golfers on the Japanese tour that they get equal standing in points to qualify?

The world is flat. The economics of golf has changed. The first step for the PGA Tour to develop personality is to have the players more accessible and the simplest way to do this is to have pro-ams at World Golf Events. But it should go further for all events. Access should be the key for those who want to follow the game of golf. The tour is about the players and the courses. Access to both will help in the selling of the game with corporations and the public.

I also enjoy playing Highland Links in Truro, Massachusetts every British Open weekend. Located on the Cape it is a true links course with cliffs falling off into the Atlantic and a lighthouse on the course that neatly frames the short par three ninth hole. The clubhouse isn’t much, but the real 19th hole is down the street at The Wellfleet Beachcomber, one of the top 10 bars you’ll visit. It rests again on the cliffs of the Atlantic facing sided of Cape Cod. It always has great Live Music and devilish fried food.

On Monday, our foursome headed north to Palm Beach Gardens for the Silver Pro-Am at The Honda Classic. Who would we play with, Jason Gore, Olin Browne, Billy Andrade… how about Scott Sterling aka Squirrel. Last year he was 21st on Nationwide and was two years removed from the tight lies tour. He has select exemptions and as we played he was figuring out if he could make it in to Bay Hill where he sits 6th on the list. At the Hope this year he was informed two hours before his tee time. He is an extremely nice guy and he had just flown into Palm Beach from Mexico. Scott had made four out of five cuts. He had a rough day on Monday, as we all did. The course is brutally tough with very thick rough and the greens are smallish and difficult to hit.

It is incredible everything that he has to coordinate and still play at a top level of golf. His caddie was stuck in Mexico, he was arranging living accommodations for the week. His expenses breakdown the following way. He books his own air travel and he looks for the best rates. One improvement over the Nationwide Tour is that he gets a car for the week of the tournament. He generally stays with friends and family during the tournament, otherwise he gets a discounted rate at the hotel, $150. Over 7 days that is $1,050, unfortunately Scott would only need four days as he would not make the cut. Caddies get $1,250 a week, if Scott wins they get 10% of purse. If he is top ten, the caddie makes 7% and top 25 is 5%. He also has a low six figure deal for clubs and ball sponsorships. He was lamenting the new PGA Tour rule that those making the cut that aren’t top 70 can’t continue on the weekend, the PGA tour just amended that rule and now they can compete on Saturday with a cut taking place there and those not making it getting $10,000. Our team did horrible but we had a great time and now Squirrel’s supporters have grown by 4.

In New England news, Renaissance Golf Club in Haverhill, Massachusetts was purchased by Southworth Development. The past year at Renaissance has seen tremendous momentum as their membership continues to grow. The recent purchase by Southworth brings stability to a club that only a short time ago was teetering on the brink of extinction.

I played in the pro-am last year with Kevin Na and man was that course tough. The rough was brutal especially when you had to carry a large body of water. I have not played since October so this should be interesting. I am scheduled to play at a real nice joint in Miami, Indian Creak. A great traditional golf course. I will give you an update on how many balls I lose.
