One of the most amazing things about the PGA Tour is the golf volunteer during tournament week. In most cases the job is very mundane and the weather is excruciatingly hot with little protection from the sun. And why do these volunteers do this for 7 days you ask? So they can pay, that’s right, they can pay in most instances for the volunteer shirt and hat that they have to wear. Have you ever thought that if they only have one shirt, they must wash it six times a week. God forbid if they have the quiet signs when players are putting or hitting and they haven’t washed the shirt all week, that will quiet a crowd. It is no wonder that it is getting tougher tournaments to procure volunteers for the week long carnival known as a PGA Tour Stop. Make no doubt about it, the volunteers are one of the key elements for the success of any PGA Tour event.

I recently returned from my trip in Florida. Couple of quick notes. On 2/23 played at Indian Creek a pristine private course just outside of South Beach. Gated entry to an island. It probably has one of the best old clubhouses in America. The men’s locker room has a basilica ceiling and it is the kind of place you could spend a couple of hours talking golf and drinking your favorite beverage. The course itself is pretty open and you have plenty of room off the tee. The challenge is the approach shot to mounded greens that are well bunkered. I found myself in the bunkers a lot. Not to make any excuses but after a five month layoff, my bunker game was not very good. I ended up shooting a 91, not really happy with that but for my first round of the year, I really didn’t expect much.

On Monday, our foursome headed north to Palm Beach Gardens for the Silver Pro-Am at The Honda Classic. Who would we play with, Jason Gore, Olin Browne, Billy Andrade… how about Scott Sterling aka Squirrel. Last year he was 21st on Nationwide and was two years removed from the tight lies tour. He has select exemptions and as we played he was figuring out if he could make it in to Bay Hill where he sits 6th on the list. At the Hope this year he was informed two hours before his tee time. He is an extremely nice guy and he had just flown into Palm Beach from Mexico. Scott had made four out of five cuts. He had a rough day on Monday, as we all did. The course is brutally tough with very thick rough and the greens are smallish and difficult to hit.

It is incredible everything that he has to coordinate and still play at a top level of golf. His caddie was stuck in Mexico, he was arranging living accommodations for the week. His expenses breakdown the following way. He books his own air travel and he looks for the best rates. One improvement over the Nationwide Tour is that he gets a car for the week of the tournament. He generally stays with friends and family during the tournament, otherwise he gets a discounted rate at the hotel, $150. Over 7 days that is $1,050, unfortunately Scott would only need four days as he would not make the cut. Caddies get $1,250 a week, if Scott wins they get 10% of purse. If he is top ten, the caddie makes 7% and top 25 is 5%. He also has a low six figure deal for clubs and ball sponsorships. He was lamenting the new PGA Tour rule that those making the cut that aren’t top 70 can’t continue on the weekend, the PGA tour just amended that rule and now they can compete on Saturday with a cut taking place there and those not making it getting $10,000. Our team did horrible but we had a great time and now Squirrel’s supporters have grown by 4.

In New England news, Renaissance Golf Club in Haverhill, Massachusetts was purchased by Southworth Development. The past year at Renaissance has seen tremendous momentum as their membership continues to grow. The recent purchase by Southworth brings stability to a club that only a short time ago was teetering on the brink of extinction.
